Trumps Embarrassing Russian Week – July 16 to July 22 2018

During his first summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16 2018, Trump in response to questions about Russia’s meddling in the 2016 US presidential elections said:

“I have great confidence in my intelligence people. But I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today. Dan Coats came to me and some others, they said they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin. He just said it’s not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be.”

Following these comments, Trump faced widespread condemnation from both Republican and Democratic politicians, however on July 17 2018, Trump made the following comments in a news conference:

“In a key sentence in my remarks, I said the word would instead of wouldn’t. The sentence should have been, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t be Russia.”

“I have felt very strongly that while Russia’s actions had no impact at all on the outcome of the election…let me be totally clear in saying that, and I’ve said this many times, I accept our intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election took place.”

“Could be other people also. There’s a lot of people out there.”

On July 18 2018, Trump was asked if Russia was still targeting the United States, Trump said, “No.”

Later in the press conference, Sarah Sanders was asked additional questions on what was perceived by reporters as an answer of “no” to the specific question of current Russian interference.

“This is the second time in three days that the president or the White House has come out and reversed what the president has said to the opposite of what it was perceived,” a reporter stated.

Sanders replied with:

“Actually I’m interpreting what the president said, not reversing it. I was in the room as well and I didn’t take it the way you did.”

On July 19, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders confirmed that Trump had invited Putin to Washington:

“In Helsinki, @POTUS agreed to ongoing working level dialogue between the two security council staffs. President Trump asked @Ambjohnbolton to invite President Putin to Washington in the fall and those discussions are already underway.”

In a series of tweets, Trump once again celebrated the summit with Putin:

“The Summit with Russia was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media. I look forward to our second meeting so that we can start implementing some of the many things discussed, including stopping terrorism, security for Israel, nuclear……..”

“….proliferation, cyber attacks, trade, Ukraine, Middle East peace, North Korea and more. There are many answers, some easy and some hard, to these problems…but they can ALL be solved!”

On July 22 2018, Trump tweeted that Obama knew about Russian meddling and that it was all a ‘hoax.’

“So President Obama knew about Russia before the election. Why didn’t he do something about it? Why didn’t he tell our campaign? Because it is all a big hoax, that’s why, and he thought Crooked Hillary was going to win!!!”
